Common Mental Health Conditions
At San Tan Psychiatry, we focus on providing the best combination of treatment for each patient based on their individual needs and preferences. This could include medication management, psychotherapy, or a combination of both modalities. If outside treatments are recommended, we will help to coordinate care using additional resources.
Anxiety
Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, or uneasiness. There are several types of anxiety such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, or Phobias (fears). Common symptoms include feeling nervous or tense, fast heart rate, sweating, trembling, feeling tired, trouble concentrating.
Bipolar
A disorder that causes intense emotional changes over periods of days to weeks. Episodes can involve feeling happy/irritable (manic/hypomanic) or more depressed. The severity and duration of symptoms will help to distinguish between Bipolar I or Bipolar II disorder. Symptoms involve feeling very high/elevated and energetic versus feeling very sad, hopeless, or worthless.
OCD
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition resulting in patients experiencing uncontrollable and recurring thoughts (obsessions), engaging in repetitive behaviors (compulsions), or a combination both. These symptoms will interfere with daily life creating difficulty or distress at home, work, social settings. or when interacting with others.
Depression
Depression is a mood disorder that causes feelings of sadness and/or loss of interest. Some common symptoms include changes in appetite, sleeping too much, loss of energy, feeling worthless or guilty, difficulty with focus or concentration, loss of interest or pleasure in things you once enjoyed.
PTSD
A psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Symptoms include intrusive memories of the event, recurring dreams or flashbacks to the event, avoiding reminders or triggers related to the event, alterations in mood or memory, being easily startled or experiencing hypervigilance, changes in mood or personality.
Personality Disorders
Patients may experience traits that are discerning to themself or others that are related to borderline, narcissistic, histrionic, antisocial, dependent, avoidant, obsessive-compulsive, or paranoid personality disorders. Often times, patients are unaware of these traits or characteristics and they may interfere with daily
ADD/ADHD
ADD/ADHD involves patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity and presents during childhood but may continue into adulthood. Common symptoms include problems with focus, organization, procrastination, losing items, being forgetful. May also experience fidgeting, talking excessively, unable to sit still, or impatience.
Insomnia
A common sleep disorder that causes difficulty with falling asleep, staying asleep, waking earlier than desired, or getting good quality sleep. Insomnia could be associated with stress or a change in your work or home schedule. Chronic or frequent insomnia could increase your risk for high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, diabetes, or neurologic disorders.
Addiction
Addiction or dependence can be associated with many things to include alcohol, recreational drugs/substances, pain medication, internet use, gaming, cannabis, pornography, or other activities which create interference with work or social life and cause significant distress in relationships. Patients will find themselves spending large amounts of time focusing on addictive behaviors.
